How Waking Up at 6AM Changed My Life

For a long time, I slept on a steady schedule of eleven or midnight until eight in the morning. School started at nine, so it was constantly a rush to get to school. Then, at the end of last year, I decided to start waking up at six in the morning, just to see what happened.

Instead of going to bed closer to midnight, I go to bed around ten. I get a full eight hours of sleep, and spend an hour each morning either working on homework, reading, checking the news, replying to emails – whatever I have to do. I spend a calm hour in my pajamas each morning before everyone else is up, starting my day with productivity.

What ended up happening is that I went to school feeling prepared. Rather than being a mess every time I got to school, scattered and anxious, when I’d had an hour in the morning to study for that morning’s history quiz, I felt far more prepared. This year, in the flood of college apps, I’ve spent that hour in the morning rereading my essays, finishing my resume, and finalizing my list of activities. Sometimes, when I don’t have much to do, I wake up and read.

Waking up at 6AM has redefined the way I spend my time and the way I approach my day. I’m more awake, well-rested, and sleep better at night.

I know this was a short post, but I wanted to share some thoughts with you all! Let me know if this has given you any goals to wake up at 6AM and what you think.

  • Okay, I’ve had the goal to wake up at 6 AM for like EVER. I KNOW I would be more productive doing it, and I’ve heard so many success stories, but when I do it, I just don’t have the willpower. I’m always like “Oh, I’m tired! I should sleep more!” I think my problem is that I don’t go to bed early enough. It’s going to take some re-structuring, but I hope to wake up at 6 next semester. Hearing that you did it makes me even more determined (and maybe you can keep me accountable??)!

    • It definitely takes some restructuring! It took me like two weeks to get into the hang of things, and now 7AM is sleeping in. I even find myself waking up earlier on the weekends! Like sleeping past ten? Not anymore! I’d love to see your progress with this next semester!

  • this is something i’ve tried to work so hard on and it hasn’t happened yet. my sleeping habits probably aren’t very healthy at all especially during the school weeks. i love having time in the mornings to do my thing just because i’m very slowwww at everything but it’s tough because i’m not a morning person! i find i’m most productive / energetic during the night so it’s going to be difficult to shift things but i feel like if i do it successfully, it would definitely benefit me!! thank you for sharing willa! man i feel so motivated now to get my life into shape!! 🙂

    • I totally know what you mean! I’m not hugely productive in the morning, but by forcing myself to be up at that time, I’m becoming better at getting my work done. It also gives me time to watch Netflix in bed in the mornings, which is a total plus.

  • This is definitely a post I am wowed by because I wake up at six every morning and I am basically a tired mess. I sleep at around 11 and it is horrible because my body is STILL not accustomed to the lack of sleep despite the fact that I very much used to get that much sleep every night last year. I can never go to bed on time. I mean 10:30 is the time I aim for but it is honestly so hard. And you told me to not use devices 30 minutes before I sleep but that is super hard for me as well. I will definitely try hard on that in the future though because I do love my sleep. Thanks for sharing your experience! So glad it’s working out for you 🙂


    • I think it’s impossible to adjust to the lack of sleep you get during the school year. And I’m sorry to say, it doesn’t get better. It just takes you telling yourself GO TO SLEEP I WILL DO THIS TOMORROW and forcing yourself to sleep to get you there. Thanks for commenting!

    DANG GIRL. I like this. Your school starts so late! Back in high school, my classes started at 7:45 so there was no choice but to wake up at 6:30am (at the latest). I’m so jealous that you’re able to go to bed at 10pm every night! I had so much homework that I didn’t get to bed until 1am so I physically could not wake up earlier than I had to. PROPS TO YOU. I can see how it’s way more relaxing – in fact, that’s kind of like college life. GO YOU.

    • Thanks girl! I hope I continue this trend in college (maybe not this early though) so I can have productive days… Also maybe start working out in the mornings? I don’t know. Maybe that’s too ambitious.
